Does My Pet Have Fleas? Here's What to Look For

Does your dog or cat seem restless, scratching non-stop, or biting at their fur? Fleas are tiny — but the signs they leave behind are hard to miss once you know what to look for.

Signs Your Pet May Have Fleas

  • Excessive scratching, especially around the neck, base of the tail, and belly
  • Red, irritated, or inflamed skin
  • Hair loss in patches from constant scratching
  • Tiny black specks in the fur (called "flea dirt")
  • Restlessness or agitation that seems out of nowhere

Try the White Towel Test

Comb your pet over a white towel. If you see small dark specks that turn reddish-brown when wet, that's flea dirt — dried blood left behind by fleas. It's one of the easiest ways to confirm an infestation early.

Act Fast

The sooner you catch it, the easier it is to treat. A quality flea comb used regularly can help you spot the problem before it spreads. Check your pet's bedding and your home too — fleas don't stay on pets alone.
